Built because every calculator online sucks
ClearCalc started as a frustration project. Every mortgage calculator gives you a number and leaves. No explanation, no context, no idea if the number is good or bad. So I built something better.
What makes this different
Most financial calculators treat you like a spreadsheet. You plug in numbers, you get a result, you leave more confused than when you arrived. ClearCalc actually explains what your numbers mean. The mortgage calculator talks to you like a mortgage broker. The tax calculator sounds like an accountant. The debt calculator speaks like a financial counselor who genuinely wants to help you get out of debt.
Every calculator adapts to where you live. Open the site in Montreal and it knows about CMHC rules, TFSA, RRSP, and references Desjardins. Open it in Texas and it knows there's no state income tax and shows FHA loan options. Open it in Germany and it talks about Grunderwerbsteuer and Bausparen. 15 countries with province and state level detail. If your country isn't in the database the AI uses its own knowledge to give you locally relevant advice.
The whole site works in English, French, Spanish, and German. Not a Google Translate widget. Every page has its own URL with local financial terms. French pages say mise de fonds not down payment. German pages reference Riester-Rente not 401k.
Under the hood
56 calculators covering mortgages, debt payoff, budgeting, taxes, salary, retirement, cost of living, inflation, net worth, and more. Each one has interactive charts, donut breakdowns, amortization tables, and comparison modes built with inline SVG and zero external libraries.
The AI explanations are powered by Claude and generated fresh every time based on your actual numbers. No generic responses. Each calculator has its own professional persona so the advice feels real.
Location detection uses the browser geolocation API with reverse geocoding cached in localStorage. A comprehensive financial law database covers tax brackets, property transfer taxes, mortgage rules, retirement accounts, minimum wages, and government programs for every supported region.
125+ blog posts auto-generated weekly and translated into all 4 languages. 600+ indexed pages. All SEO optimized with location-aware content.
User accounts let you save calculations, track net worth over time, set financial goals with progress tracking, and get a personalized dashboard tailored to your financial focus. All optional and free.
The stack
Built solo with Next.js, Claude API, Supabase, and Vercel. CSS-in-JS with zero external UI libraries. Every chart and animation is hand-coded SVG and CSS keyframes. Deployed on Vercel edge network.
The person behind it
Built by Tyler from Montreal. Started as a side project, turned into something people actually use. 1,200+ calculations and counting. If you have feedback or ideas for new calculators, reach out at contact@clearcalcai.com.
